Description
An account of the resource
The open headpiece is centred on the top of the page and runs the width of the letterpress. The ornament depicts a human-like figure, facing frontal, with eyes looking downward. The head is centred at the top; on either side of the face, long, dark hair splits into four sections, with two ribbon-like strands of waving black and white on each side, extending almost the entire width of the headpiece. Near the end of the sections of hair, the two pieces on each side interlace in knotwork.. The torso of the figure is nude. Arms extend down on an angle on either side. The hands are open, with the thumbs pointing down and away from the rest of the fingers. Two stylized legs curve out from the torso, filled with black ink and marked by a white triangular pattern. The legs curve back up on either side of the torso. Long wavy lines extend horizontally across the ornament, filled with black ink, with an equally-sized space between each. Where the wavy lines overlap with the body, the sections that are filled with black ink alternate with white space.. The wavy lines also overlap with the tops of the legs, creating a woven, checkered pattern.

Description
An account of the resource
The open headpiece is centered on the top of the page and runs the width of the letterpress. The ornament shows three human heads in profile, facing the left side of the page. Each face has one closed eye. Each figure is wearing a headpiece; those on either side of the centre are filled with black ink, while the one in the centre is left uninked. Each headpiece has a different symbolic decoration in the centre, formed of geometric shapes. The hair on each head is divided into three long black strands decorated with three rectangular bands; the strands link and join in decorative spirals and interlaced knots under the heads.

Description
An account of the resource
The open headpiece is centred on the top of the page and runs the width of the letterpress. The ornament forms a symmetrical pattern of geometric shapes. The first shape, repeated on the outer-two sides and in the centre, is formed of black lines ending in points, with highly detailed interiors formed by thick black lines and three black circles, offset by black triangles with white circles.. The second shape, located in between the first shapes, is formed by diagonal lines around white space; there are two black triangles in the centre of each, with a pattern of three white circles.

Breton folktale about Eve of All Souls (Hallowe'en) and November as month of the dead
Description
An account of the resource
Author's Note: In parts of Brittany it is the belief that on the Eve of All Souls, the Dead are permitted to return to the world; but that, being shapeless and voiceless, they enter into the bodies of the beggars who are called by the people the ' Children of God,' and in their form go from house to house, leaving on each a blessing. In the canticle of St. Herve it is said that as a child he went out with such as these to 'Sing the song of the souls': and one or more versions of these songs yet linger. As All Souls is the day of the Dead, so November is the Black Month, the Month of the Dead: more especially upon the coasts where the fall of the year brings home the fishermen who have been away at Iceland or the Bank, and of whom, all the long Summer, there has been no news. Day after day through the early Autumn, the' goelettes' come in with every tide; but as the time passes, the waiting for those that delay grows more anxious and the home-coming less sure. And as every season there are many who do not come home, it is indeed true that' November makes more widows than all the rest of the year.

The open headpiece is centered on the top of the page and runs the width of the letterpress. The headpiece shows two human faces facing frontally. Behind the two faces is a zig-zag pattern that is comprised of diagonal lines filled with black ink of varying thickness. Each face is enclosed within a rectangular shape that is cut off at the top of the face, where it connects with a separate zig-zag pattern, and runs the width of the rectangle. The background zig-zag pattern continues within the rectangles, in alternating bands of black and white.

Description
An account of the resource
The open tailpiece is centred under the text and takes up about half the page. At the centre of the image is a small grotesque creature. The figure is facing forward, sitting cross-legged with its hands resting on its knees. The figure has pointed ears. A large geometric shape surrounds the figure, formed of diagonal lines, triangles, circles, and spirals. The upper corners of the ornament form heraldic triangles containing sword shapes; the bottom of the ornament terminates in a downward pointing arrow.

Description
An account of the resource
The open headpiece is centred on the top of the page and runs the width of the letterpress. The ornament shows two almost identical human faces in profile facing the left side of the page. The one on the left has almost fully closed eyes, while the one on the right has open eyes. They both have long, dark hair extending out behind them in thick, interlacing strands decorated with square devices. The sections of hair interlace with each other, creating a knotwork pattern. Each strand is filled with black ink, except for where the pieces overlap.

Description
An account of the resource
The open headpiece is centred on the top of the page and runs the width of the letterpress. The ornament consists of three circular human faces , under which are four heraldic-shaped faces or masks. The three circular faces on the top of the headpiece are equally spaced with one in the centre and one on either side. Each of these three faces is contained within a double-ruled circle, and each has a different expression. The one on the left appears sad; the one in the centre appears to be screaming; the one on the right appears to be sleeping. The four grotesque or heraldic faces below, alternating in a pattern with the circular ones above, are smaller, less-detailed, and more oval-shaped, but also show a variety of expressions: happy, calm, sad, afraid. Each of the four faces has an ornamental headpiece that connects with the circular faces above to form a linking pattern; each of the three circular faces links with the ones below with a repeating pattern of stepped linear shapes.

Description
An account of the resource
The open headpiece is centred on the top of the page and runs the width of the letterpress. The ornament shows a kneeling human figure in profile, facing the right side of the page. The figure has long hair that reaches from the top centre of the ornament to the bottom left; the hair ends in multiple spirals that reach the figure’s feet. The figure’s hands are reaching out to hold a long-necked bird, a stylized swan, whose body is formed of interlacing ribbons forming a large knot. As the bird is shown in profile, only one wing can be seen. This wing extends back and reaches the leg of the human figure.

Description
An account of the resource
The open headpiece is centred on the top of the page and runs the width of the letterpress. A human-like, grotesque head is centred in the ornament. Six curved ribbons extend out from the top of the head, each ending in a spiral, giving the appearance of hair. An arm stretches straight out from either side of the head, with the hands grasping the ornamental terminus. Two large knots are in the top left and top right corners. A geometric pattern made of straight lines continues underneath and around the head. These lines extend up on either side of the ornament, and the hands hold on to the form they create.

Description
An account of the resource
The open headpiece is centred on the top of the page and runs the width of the letterpress. The ornament features a large mythical creature, likely a dragon, that stretches across the entire image. The dragon is moving toward the left, but its head is turned backward to face a human figure with long, light hair and a pointed beard sitting on its back, and shown in profile. His left hand is held down and is resting on the beast, but his right hand is raised above his head and is holding a sword. The beast’s mouth is open, showing pointed teeth. In front of the beast on the far left another male figure with long, dark hair and a pointed beard sits between the dragon’s front feet. His right arm is stretched out so that his palm rests on the beast, as if pushing it away. Various patterns of stripes and circles decorate the beast’s body. Its tail is wrapped in a large knot on the right side of the ornament.
